Dr. Chuck Gartland
Chuck Gartland has been at Kent State University since 1987. He has been a Professor of Mathematics since 1995, as well as a Professor in the Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program since 1996. He was educated at Purdue University, where he received a B.S. in Engineering Science (1972), an M.S. in Mathematics (1976), and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (1980). He served in the U.S. Army from 1972 to 1974 and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
Dr. Gartland is also a professor in the chemical-physics interdisciplinary program at Kent State. Professor Gartland's research interests are in the areas of computational applied mathematics and the numerical modeling of problems arising in the physics of liquid crystals and related areas of materials science. He has published over 40 research papers in refereed journals and has given over 50 invited talks and conference presentations. He has supervised four masters theses and four doctoral dissertations and has received six individual research grants from the National Science Foundation (Division of Mathematical Sciences), in addition to serving as co-PI in the NSF Science and Technology Center on "Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials" (ALCOM) in the Liquid Crystal Institute at Kent State University (1991-2002). He has also been the recipient of numerous National Science Foundation grants.
Dr. Gartland is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is also a member of the International Liquid Crystal Society (ILCS), which he has served as Treasurer since 2000--the ILCS is a professional organization with nearly 900 members, from 43 countries.
