The John F. Fiedler-BorgWarner Endowed Chair in Global Business Studies
The John F. Fiedler-BorgWarner Endowed Chair in Global Business Studies was established at Kent State University’s College of Business Administration and Graduate School of Management in 2003 by John F. Fiedler, former chief executive, and the BorgWarner Corporation. The John F. Fiedler-BorgWarner Endowed Chair provides a focus on global business matters for both the Kent academic community and regional interests. This is accomplished by bringing an experienced corporate executive to the Kent State campus to instruct students, and to participate in and direct programs designed to enhance the importance of global business studies. Twice yearly, the John F. Fiedler-BorgWarner Endowed Chair invites distinguished speakers to address significant global business issues and topics.
Dr. Michael J. Barnes was the first John F. Fiedler-BorgWarner Endowed Chair from August 2003 until August 2007. Dr. Barnes was uniquely qualified to bring a mix of business experience and academic credentials to this position. He has more than twenty five years of business experience in international finance and investment banking, holding positions with the World Bank in Washington D.C., as the Executive Director of Fuji International Finance Limited in London, as the Executive Director and First Vice President of the Union Bank of Switzerland in Zurich, and as the Deputy General Manager of the London Branch of the Industrial Bank of Japan.
Dr. Barnes has research experience at the London Business School, and participated in executive programs at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and the Harvard Institute for International Development. He holds a BSc from the London School of Economics, MBA from Stanford and an Executive Doctor of Management from Case Western Reserve University.
At Case Western's Weatherhead School, Dr. Barnes served as Assistant Dean for Action Learning & Corporate Liaison and as the Executive Director of Relationship Management. Subsequently, he was Assistant Dean and Director of the Full-Time MBA Program at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.
